Are 471 op amps suitable for audio equipmant?
I’m trying to build a radio / mp3 amplifier system and have heard that 741 op amps will cause a hissing sound. Is this true? If so would an instrumentation amplifier set up work? Also, is there a maximum voltage that they can output? Thanks very much in advance.
The 471 op amp is not bad but it has a VERY high bandwidth for your application. I would recommend that you look for a good “audio op amp” if you are building and audio amplifier. 741 op amps are the cheapest out there to mess around with but they will have a little bit of thermal noise introduced. (741’s have a 1MEG bandwidth and are also not audio op amps.) If you want to try and build a nicer sounding unit I would look at something like a LM4562 or a LM833.
The LM4562 is the best in my eyes. I can take a power supply of between ±2.5V to ±17V and it is a High Fidelity audio chip with output short circuit protection.
